Get At It!
Getting to the point where you’re dominating a tough exercise routine takes a lot of hard work. Trust me, I know. But, to get the results you want, you have to GET AT IT!
My trainer, EJ Adams (who trains out of Every Dai Sports) has to pick me off the ground sometimes to keep me going. Some days it’s just tough to work out and give it all you’ve got. Plain and simple: sometimes working out just sucks.
But one thing EJ has taught me is that you have to be kind to yourself. He says, it’s important to encourage yourself, but without doing a drill sergeant act. For example, before I started training with the Atlanta-based celebrity trainer I had more of a strict “Suck it up!” attitude. I tended to be really hard on myself. But in the three months since hiring EJ to whip my butt into shape, he’s taught me to be nice to myself. He’s made it clear that “sweeter” self-talk like, “Go, champ!” will help get me the results I want. By taking the negativity away, he’s helped me build my endurance.
In order to dominate a workout you have to summon the strength to get through it. So keep negative emotions in check.
EJ pushes his clients, including me, by reiterating, “remember why you started.”
I think that’s crucial because we all start for different reasons. For me, it’s because I have no choice. I have a number of autoimmune system disorders – two of which make it very difficult for me to lose weight. So there are days EJ has to really push me – and on those days, he reminds me to “get at it.”
But what he’s truly taught me is you can’t achieve your body goals when you don’t create a habit of being positive and getting to the gym. Note: experts say, 50% of people who start new fitness programs quit within the first 3 weeks. Don’t be one of those people. But as EJ says, the choice is yours, and it’s simple. Get. At. It.
