There is no need to overhaul your life to look GORG. But it is time to break some rules. Okay, maybe not break — but it is time to tweak the old beauty rules that were handed down from your mama (which she got from her mama). You get the point.
| Beauty Rules: Time to Tweak |
Old Rule: Don’t go to sleep with your makeup on.
New Rule: Wash your face as soon as you get home.
Experts say, that skin actually starts renewing itself as soon as the sun goes down. Dermatologists also say, while washing your face: ease up. That means you have to pick the right cleanser. Depending on your skin type, you need to pick a pH-balanced cleanser that’s perfect for your face. Experts advise a foaming or gel cleanser for oily skin and a creamier cleanser for dry skin. But no bar soap, ever. It’s just too drying.
Old Rule: Spend all day Sunday with your hair in an avocado bun.
New Rule: Save time and your strands with a fast penetrative mask.
While I like DIY hair masks — and will blog about my favorite ones in a future post — here are some products that give you the same results, but way faster if you’re willing to spend some cash. As Philadelphia hairstylist Lauren Aninsman likes to point out, “these days, no one’s got time to sit at home for hours with a deep conditioner in their hair.” So we asked Aninsman her which masks have proven to work and she recommend the ones below.
Old Rule: Never leave the house without a full face of makeup.
New Rule: Downgrade your makeup routine.
Look, I grew up in a family where my mom and grandmother grew up telling us “it was our job” to make sure we always looked your best before we left the house. Um, no. Love them both – but I’m here to tell you that you have to let your skin breathe. Not only that, but you also have to learn to really appreciate your natural beauty. Example: I go without makeup for an entire day, on a weekly basis. However, if you’re a makeup addict and can’t see yourself giving up all your favorite products. Just try to cut the number of products you use to 2 or 3 – then call it a day. Trust me your skin will thank me later.
